Young, driven and passionate. Four promising classical saxophonists with a great love of chamber music.

The four musicians hail from China, Croatia, the Netherlands and Switzerland, and met at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where all four studied with one of the most renowned classical saxophonists worldwide, Arno Bornkamp. From their very first encounter, they experienced a natural unity when playing together, and so the musical spark was ignited (ardemus, lat.: we burn)!

Since the ensemble’s formation in 2014, Ardemus Quartet initially concentrated in the Netherlands, but in the meantime has performed concerts in many other European countries. The quartet has performed in numerous festivals in the Netherlands, Switzerland and in Croatia e.g. Holland Festival, Festival Jong Talent in Schiermonnikoog, Musical Evenings St. Donat in Zadar, Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam, Festival Next Generation in Bad Ragaz, and has performed in renowned concert halls, such as the Muziekgebouw aan ʼt IJ, the Lisinski Hall in Zagreb, the NedPho-Koepel in Amsterdam, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and the Konzerthaus Berlin. Furthermore, the Ardemus Quartet has its own concert series at Stadsherstel Amsterdam in the season 2016/17.

The young musicians have already won numerous prizes; such as the 2nd prize at the Boris Papandopulo Competition in Zagreb (2015), the Incentive Prize at the finals of Storioni Toonzaal Competitie (2016), the audience prize at the finals of Grachtenfestival Conservatorium Concours (2016), and the first prize at the 13th International Competition for Young Musicians Ferdo Livadić in Samobor, Croatia (2016). Furthermore, the Ardemus Quartet is one of the four finalists of Dutch Classical Talent. As finalists they will tour the Netherlands in the season 2017/2018, playing in the most renowned concert halls. They also passed to the semifinals in the Wind section of the 9th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition in Japan in May 2017, one of the most prestigious competitions for chamber music.

In order to further refine their technical skills and musical ideas, the Ardemus Quartet studies at the Netherlands String Quartet Academy (NSKA) with Sven Arne Tepl (former member of the Utrecht String Quartet) and Marc Danel (Quatuor Danel) and also enjoys guidance from Arno Bornkamp (Aurelia Saxophone Quartet). The four musicians have also attended masterclasses held by Luc-Marie Aguera (Ysaÿe Quartet), Prof. Eberhard Feltz (Berlin), Misha Amory (Brentano Quartett) and saxophonists Vincent David, Jean-Denis Michat and Claude Delangle.

„The Ardemus Saxophone Quartet is a incredibly driven collective of young top musicians. Besides their technical abilities I'm very impressed by the high degree of musicianship, feeling for style and their strong stage presence.“

Sven Arne Tepl, professor of chamber music at the Conservatory of Amsterdam

These four musicians, all from different backgrounds, combined their forces and built a quartet of high quality within short time. The high level of playing is supported by a big joy of performing and a contagious musicality."
